TRUSTING RAIN Scoops Up “Best Short Doc” at Blue Ridge Film & Music Festival

We’re so pleased to announce that Kristin Alexander’s documentary, TRUSTING RAIN, was awarded with the Best Short Documentary at the Blue Ridge Film & Music Festival, held this year from October 12 to 14 in Buchanan, Virginia.

TRUSTING RAIN focuses on the small island nation of Bermuda, where residents have developed innovative water conservation techniques to make up for the island’s lack of fresh water sources. But a new generation of non-conservation-minded residents and visitors are putting this fragile balance at risk, instead turning to energy-intensive methods such as shipping in drinking water and produce from the mainland and building desalinization plants.

TRUSTING RAIN will appear next at the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, in collaboration with the Voices from the Waters Festival in Bangalore.  Held from March 31-April 7, 2013, the film will be screened in a classroom setting on the Ithaca College campus, with discussion led by a college professor open to the public.

Bermuda’s Water Ways

Kristin’s on a roll these days! After a pit stop back home in Massachusetts to shoot an informational segment for John Todd Ecological Design, she’s headed to Bermuda for a screening of her 2012 doc, Trusting Rain.

The short film, which looks at Bermuda’s history of water conservation (and growing wastefulness and demand) is the perfect match for a conference organized by the Bermuda Environmental & Sustainability Taskforce (BEST). Focusing on “Bermuda’s Water Ways,” the film will open the discussion on Bermuda’s limited water supplies and the road to a sustainable water conservation strategy on the small Atlantic island.

Held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on Tuesday, October 23, Kristin will be joined for a panel discussion by Stuart Hayward (who appears in the film), Carvel Van Putten, Mark Rowe, Francis Marshall, and moderated by Carol Dixon.

Way to go, Kristin! Please bring us back a sample of that precious (and delicious) water!

‘Trusting Rain’ to Screen at Bermuda Intn’l Film Fest

UnderCurrent Productions is pleased to announce that Kristin Alexander’s short film Trusting Rain will premiere at the Bermuda International Film Festival on March 20.

Shot over the course of the past two years, Kristin’s documentary explores island’s water shortages and the ingenious ways Bermudians have found to conserve it— at home, on the farm, and in municipal areas. Looking at water through the lens of cultural identity, the film also addresses the problems the island — and the world — faces in an era of water shortages.

Will Bermudians continue to teach their children (and visitors) about sustainable water use, or will the island revert to energy- intensive desalination and water importation?

Trusting Rain

An offshore tax haven? Island paradise? Or an example of ingenuity in water conservation?

Rainwater collection is a way of life in Bermuda. With no natural springs, rivers, or ponds on the island, each household is responsible for its own supply.

Though visitors are blissfully unaware of the island’s tenuous existence, and it’s centuries old method of water conservation.

Capturing rainwater is second nature for the inhabitants of Bermuda, born of necessity and ingenuity.

Set against a the natural beauty of the island, this film reveals the complex relationship between natural resources and a growing population.

By “trusting rain,” Bermudan’s personal stories provide us with lessons with important applications on an increasingly thirsty planet.
